History: Since she was a young filly, Applejack has lived and worked on a peaceful apple farm on the outskirts of town with her grandmother, big brother, and baby sister. Presumably she had parents at some point, but for unknown reasons they have not played an active role in the family life. They may or may not have died, but I will leave this as open-ended as the show does.

She didn't settle straight into her destiny as a farmpony, of course. As a filly she grew bore of the repetitive chores and small world of the farm, and she set out on a journey of self discovery to Manehattan, the Big Apple. Where her relatives Auntie and Uncle Orange lived, funnily enough. The cityfolk lived a refined life: they spoke with sophisticated airs, ate microscopic portions of funny-tasting food, and always carried themselves with strenuous poise that appeared effortless. What it lacked, though, was love---the warm, loud, open love of her family on the farm, anyway. So after a night's trial of the city, Applejack returned to her cozy home on the apple farm and proudly accepted her destiny as a farmpony, always willing to put in a day's honest work.

Applejack grew up juggling her many responsibilities: tending to apple trees, herding cattle, caring for her family (especially her younger sister) and selling the family's wares in town. But all those constraints on her time never kept Applejack from remaining a friendly face to any soul who needed it, and perhaps that was the key to the friendship that would change her life forever.

On the eve of the Summer Sun Celebration, a young student of Princess Celestia named Twilight Sparkle arrived in town to check on Ponyville's progress in preparing for the party. Her first stop was Sweet Apple Acres, where she met Applejack with the strict intent of conducting her business. Applejack, naturally, chose instead to treat her life family and stuff her gut full of fine apple products.

Unfortunately, the party was interrupted by the return of the evil Nightmare Moon, and by coincidence or fate, Twilight Sparkle ventured into the forest to stop the crisis accompanied by five ponies she'd met on her travels, Applejack among them. Each pony showed Twilight a gesture of friendship along the way: Applejack's was on faith, a promise that Twilight would survive a scary situation. And she did!

So when Twilight arrived to confront Nightmare Moon, the newly created bond between the girls unlocked Equestria's most powerful magic: the magic of friendship, channeled through ancient relics known as the Elements of Harmony. Each of the new friends was chosen to bear an element: Applejack's was honesty, a representation of her open nature, faith, and belief in hard work. And

From that day on, the six new friends lived together in Ponyville, confronting the everyday challenges of life and friendship. Usually, the challenges Applejack faced were mundane: working past her stubborn pride in an overwhelming situation, keeping her rigid ideals about a good time from ruining a family gathering, graciously accepting a loss in a competition, or telling the truth even when everyone around you will hate to find out. But on occasion, evil threats have returned to Ponyville, requiring the six friends to combine their strength and seal the darkness.

Her latest challenge was a doozy: to keep the heart of Equestria alive, the six friends had to surrender their Elements of Harmony. The loss of that magic left Ponyville vulnerable to another mass-scale attack: and that's exactly what happened. All the ponies lost their special powers to a hulking behemeoth hell bent on leveling Ponyville, and all seemed lost. He succeeded in leveling Twilight's lovely library, triggering one of the fiercest magic battles of all time.

But that wasn't the end of it. All the girls had lived up to their Element even when it was difficult: for Applejack, her greatest challenge was the hardest form of honesty: telling an unpopular truth that people might hate you for. She succeeded and saved the day, as did the others, and thus the girls unlocked a great power: the rainbow, a pure fusion of the Elements' powers to be used in times of great crisis. Using this new form of their magic, they restored Equestria once again.

They now have a new mission: Twilight has been crowned the Princess of Friendship, and her five friends are her royal advisers. Together, they will show Equestria the light one pony at a time.

Personality:
From the tip of her cowgirl hat to the twang in her voice, Applejack is very obviously a country pony. There are certain stereotypes that often come to mind at the sight of a country-dwelling gal: she's simple, she'll tell it like it is, she's a homebody and very attached to her farm, and she's not much of an academic type. All of these things are true about her, but that's just the surface.

Applejack is indeed dedicated to her family and her farm, and very proud of how far they've come through her own hard work. Like the rest of her family, she believes in a good, long, honest day of work, and will forgo sleep, meals, social time, and just about everything that gets between her and the farm's success. It's all for the love of the family business, and her family: as long as Granny's safe and warm, Big Macintosh can rest sometimes, and Apple Bloom is well fed and well loved, they're okay. She'll haul flank and rally the troops to get it all done, just to see the smiles on their faces.

But there's a problem: Applejack's extreme stubbornness, perfectionism, and pride in self-sufficiency can just as easily put a wall between her and a simpler solution to any problem. Applejack feels such a strong need to be sure of the right path that when she comes to believe she's right, she will stick to a course of action despite the detriment to herself. She'll heavily berate herself if she fails---if someone gets hurt under her watch, if she fails to raise money for a community project, or if the farm loses business. It often takes friendly intervention to get her to accept help or forgive herself for mistakes.

Life's not entirely work for Applejack, though. She's a big believer in old-style neighborly hospitality and in being part of a community---so she's got a fairly wide circle of friends in Ponyville. When the chores are done, Applejack makes darn sure that everypony in her life is doing okay. She always has an ear to lend if a friend has a problem. She'll go to the ends of the earth to save somepony, even if she has to fight a scary beast to do it. And she has a motherly fondness for friends who need a bit of old-fashioned comfort. Her fussy mother side appears most readily when she's in close proximity to her baby sister Apple Bloom or her sensitive friend Fluttershy, but she's prone to taking anypony who might need some protecting under her metaphorical wing.

But perhaps the thing people remember most about Applejack is the element of friendship she represents: honesty. Applejack earned her element with her easy and open acceptance of Twilight Sparkle. When Twilight's fears took hold, Applejack comforted her with a simple show of faith that everything would be okay. Applejack trusts herself, trusts her friends, and trusts the world---if they work hard and stick together, she honestly believes everything will be okay. Trying times can shake her resolve a little, but even when it looks hopeless, she'll never stop fighting for her family and friends.

Her honesty can sometimes conflict with her other values, though---her firm belief in self-sufficiency at all costs will sometimes cause her to hide it when she needs help. And despite her belief in truth, she really doesn't like to rock the boat and upset people, so she was once conned into going along with a supposedly harmless lie when the truth would hurt people she loves. She's learned her lesson, though, and now treasures the faith her community shows her.

Strengths: Applejack has several talents related to her farmpony life: her legs are strong enough to clear all the apples from a tree with a single buck, she can herd and lasso wayward animals, she makes some of the best apple-based treats around, and she can mess around with a banjo. You know...in case they need to save the world with music, or something.
Weaknesses: Due to her stubborn pride, Applejack is rather easily provoked into a rash course of action. She can look before she leaps and get hurt if she's not careful. She's also especially closed-minded when she's sure that her way is the right way, and that can get in the way of solving a problem.
Possessions: Hat. She no longer has her Element of Harmony or the key to the Rainbow Power, so her hat would be the main thing she can't live without.
Pony/Animal Type: Earth pony
Cutie Mark: Apples! Three of them, just like her three family members.

First Person:

[There's a face that some of y'all probably know peering into the scroll. Yup, it's Applejack of Sweet Apple Acres...another one. She stands in front of an apple tree (where else?).]

Would somepony mind explainin' what in the hay happened to Ponyville?

Could be worse, I suppose. At least all the buildings that are supposed to be standing still are. But there's a bunch of new ones from outta nowhere. And I'm guessing that's got something to do with all you new folk hanging around town. Where'd y'all come from, anyhow? Coltcinati?

[She tilts her head questioningly for a moment, but she doesn't expect a response yet.]

Anyhow, the important thing is that all of y'all need some good old-fashioned Apple Family hospitality! Can't be going about my business without getting to know the new faces. So here's how it'll work: anypony's welcome to come on down to Sweet Apple Acres for a bite to eat this afternoon. It'll be ready right around suppertime.

...and, uh, if you're coming, I sure hope you like apples. It's kind of our specialty around here. But I'm sure I can whip something together if you can't eat one for whatever reason!

[She smiles broadly, tips her hat, and closes the scroll.]
